Stay indoors when the sun is at its hottest. This is usually the 4 hours in the middle of the day. If you have a pool, try swimming in the evening when the sun is beginning to set. Remember, the sun's rays are not only intense in the summer, but also in the winter. Try not to stare at the sun, even with sunglasses because of it's UV rays.

Wear sunscreen. High SPF sunscreen really protects against the sun, but has diminishing returns. For example, SPF 30 isn't twice as effective as SPF 15.SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and multiplies by the number. (For example, SPF 15 would be 15x protection if you were not wearing any)

Stay in the shade. If you have to be in direct sunlight for a long time, use clothing to block the sunlight.Instead of reading on a pool chair, try going under a large tree with big branches to shade you.

Wear sunglasses. The type of sunglasses that will give the best protection to your eyes are UV protective glasses. They will protect UVB rays from harming your eyes because these rays cannot pass through glass.
